Anonymous Mode is Flo's most powerful privacy feature. When enabled, you can track your cycle without your name, email, IP address, or any other identifying information being linked to your health data. No one, not even Flo, can identify you in Anonymous Mode.
Key features:
- No personal identifiers linked to your health data
- Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) protocol prevents tracking
- Post-quantum cryptography for future-proof security and privacy
- Open-source technology is available for the entire industry
- Globally recognized, multi-award-winning technology
Available to all Flo users at no cost, no matter your subscription status.
Overview: What Is Anonymous Mode?
Anonymous Mode lets you use Flo without linking your identity to your health data. This means:
✅ No name - You don't need to provide your real name
✅ No email - You can use Flo without an email address
✅ No IP address - Your location and network identity are hidden
✅ No tracking identifiers - Technical identifiers cannot link data to you
✅ No way to identify you - Even Flo cannot tell who you are
Why this matters:
Whether you switch to Anonymous Mode or not, your data is protected.
Anonymous Mode means that if Flo ever receives an official request for data, we simply won’t be able to provide it. Your health data exists, but there's no way for us to know it's yours.

What Is Flo Anonymous Mode?
Anonymous Mode is Flo's award-winning privacy feature that lets you track your health without your name, email, IP address, or any other identifiers being linked to your health data. We immediately accelerated its launch in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Anonymous Mode uses the Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) protocol and post-quantum cryptography, so no single party can see both your identity and your health data. Even Flo can’t identify individuals using Anonymous Mode.
How It Works (Technical Deep Dive)
Anonymous Mode uses cutting-edge privacy technology to protect your identity. Here's how the system works.
Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) Protocol
What it is:
Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) is a privacy-protecting technology specified in IETF RFC 9458. It prevents apps and websites from seeing who you are, even while you're using them.
How it works:
Imagine asking a trusted messenger to deliver a sealed letter for you. The messenger knows who you are, but can’t see what’s inside the letter. When the letter is delivered, the recipient can read the message, but doesn’t know who sent it. This is essentially how OHTTP works.
We further strengthen this by using post-quantum encryption alongside OHTTP. This means the “letter” is not only impossible to open today, but is secured in a way that remains protected even against future technologies such as quantum computers.
More technically:
Without OHTTP (regular app mode):
Your device → Flo's servers
Flo can view: Your IP address, device info, and health data together
With OHTTP (Anonymous Mode):
Your device → Cloudflare OHTTP relay → Flo's servers
Cloudflare hosts: Your IP address (but not your health data)
Flo can view: Your health data (but not your IP address or identity)
No single party one can access both pieces of information together.
The relay acts as a privacy barrier. Cloudflare can view who you are, but not your health data. Flo can view your health data, but does not know who it belongs to.
Post-Quantum Cryptography
We use post-quantum cryptography alongside our OHTTP setup because health data will always be sensitive, and its protection should stand the test of time. Rather than waiting for new technologies to introduce new risks, we’ve built future-ready protection directly into Anonymous Mode.
So, what is post-quantum cryptography?
What it is:
Post-quantum cryptography is a type of encryption designed to stay secure even as computer technology evolves. Future quantum computers – an emerging kind of computer that can solve certain problems far faster than today’s machines – could potentially break some of the encryption methods we rely on now.
Why it matters:
Today's encryption is based on mathematical problems that are difficult for today’s computers to solve, but could become easier for quantum computers in the future. Post-quantum cryptography uses different mathematical approaches that don’t have known shortcuts, even for quantum machines. By implementing post-quantum cryptography now, we ensure your data stays private even as computing technology advances.
Cloudflare Partnership
Why Cloudflare:
Cloudflare operates one of the world's largest networks, with hundreds of data centers worldwide. This infrastructure provides the reliability and speed needed for OHTTP to work seamlessly.
How the partnership works:
Cloudflare acts as the OHTTP relay, the privacy barrier between your identity and your health data. Importantly, Cloudflare doesn't store or access your health information; it simply forwards encrypted data it can't read. Just like our trusted messenger in the above example!
Trust model:
Cloudflare’s role is intentionally limited to keep your data truly anonymous. Even if they wanted to, Cloudflare can’t access your health data, and likewise, Flo can’t identify you.
Open-Source Technology
We've open-sourced the code:
The technology powering Anonymous Mode is available on GitHub at https://github.com/flohealth. This means:
✅ Security researchers can audit our implementation
✅ Other femtech companies can use the same technology
✅ The privacy community can verify our claims
✅ Improvements can come from the broader developer community
Why open source matters:
1) Closed-source privacy tools require you to trust the company's claims. Open-source technology can be independently verified. So, don't take our word for it; check out the code yourself.
2) When it comes to privacy, we don’t gatekeep. We believe everyone deserves the same level of privacy protection, regardless of which tracking app they use–we’d love other companies to take advantage of the investments we’ve made in privacy protections in the industry.

How Does Anonymous Mode Work?
Anonymous Mode uses a three-step process:
- Your health data is encrypted on your device
- The encrypted data is sent through an OHTTP relay (Cloudflare) that cannot access your health data
- Your identifiers, such as IP address, are stripped from your health data
- Flo receives your health data, but does not receive any identifying information
This architectural separation makes it impossible to connect your identity to your health information.
Is Anonymous Mode Really Anonymous?
Yes. Anonymous Mode is truly anonymous. Flo cannot link your health data to your identity in Anonymous Mode This is because:
- The OHTTP protocol hides IP addresses
- No email or name is collected
- Device identifiers are separated from health data
- Even with a court order, Flo cannot identify Anonymous Mode users
