Do You Know How Your Period Tracker Uses Your Data? How to Check Privacy Policies

By Kate Eskins, Senior Privacy Counsel

When you use a period tracking app, you may choose to share some of your most intimate health information. But do you know how that data is actually used—and how well it’s protected?

It’s easy to scroll past a privacy policy without reading it. A lot of people do. But when it comes to reproductive health data, understanding how your information is handled is incredibly important.

You should always be in control of your personal data, and a privacy policy is the first step in helping you stay that way.  It should clearly explain what information is collected, how it’s used, and what choices you have—so you can make a genuine, informed decision about whether to use an app and trust it with your data.

It’s also a strong positive when an app presents privacy information in bite-sized, easy-to-understand formats. Reading long legal documents isn’t always practical. Companies that recognise this—and take the time to highlight key parts of their policy in clear, accessible summaries—show that they genuinely want you to understand how your data is handled. By offering information in different, user-friendly formats, they make it easier for you to get the details that matter and make informed choices.

You shouldn’t have to work hard to figure out what’s happening with your information. Clear, accessible information helps you stay informed—and in control.

Why Period Tracker Privacy Matters

Period tracking apps often go beyond logging cycle dates. Many allow you to record symptoms, moods, sexual activity, fertility windows, and other intimate details. That’s sensitive, intimate information—and it deserves robust protection, clear transparency, and meaningful choice about what you decide to share.

But, the reality is that not all period trackers treat your data with the same level of care. Unlike Flo, some apps simply don’t have privacy or security programs, so they can’t effectively protect your data even if they claim to.

Red Flags to Look Out For

When you’re checking a period tracking app’s privacy practices, watch out for:

  • Unclear privacy information: If an app’s privacy information is vague or hard to understand—and you’re still unsure how your data is handled after reading it—that’s a clear red flag.
  • Material policy changes without proper notification: If an app makes important privacy changes without telling you, that’s a red flag. Pay attention to updates that feel unclear, inconsistent, or quietly pushed through.
  • Misleading anonymity claims: Claims about “anonymous” data can be misleading. An app may not collect your name or email, but still gather technical identifiers like IP addresses that can identify you. Be wary of impressive-sounding language and check the details (or ask questions) if something doesn’t add up.
  • Location as the only guarantee: Be cautious of apps that rely on where they’re based as their main privacy assurance (for example, “we’re based in Europe, so your data is protected”). While local laws matter, location alone doesn’t guarantee strong privacy practices.
  • No transparency on advanced privacy features: If an app promotes advanced privacy or security features, you should be able to find public technical information–such as a white paper–that explains how they work. You should also see plain-language explanations that help you understand the essentials without needing a technical background.

What Good Privacy Practices Look Like

Spotting red flags is important, but knowing what good privacy practices look like can help you choose apps you can truly trust.

The best period trackers don’t just meet the legal minimum. They go further—earning your trust by investing in strong privacy and security measures, being transparent about how your data is used, and giving you real control over your information. Here’s what sets privacy-first apps apart:

  • Clear, accessible privacy policies: Your app should clearly explain how it uses and protects your data—in plain language that’s easy to understand. Look for apps that provide a dedicated Privacy Portal or Trust Center, where the most important details about their privacy practices are clearly laid out. A real green flag is when it feels obvious that the company wants you to understand how your data is handled—not hide it in fine print.
  • Regular updates: Privacy policies shouldn’t be static documents that sit untouched for years. Look for policies that are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect how your data is actually used, with clear dates and explanations of what has changed. This signals a genuine commitment to transparency.
  • Independent certification: Look for evidence-based compliance, like ISO certifications. Because some apps can overstate or miscommunicate their privacy practices, independent third-party verification matters. Certifications such as ISO 27001 for information security and ISO 27701 for privacy management help verify that an app’s privacy claims are credible.
  • Dedicated privacy teams: The strongest apps invest in dedicated privacy and security teams to ensure privacy is built into every part of the product. Meet Flo's privacy and security teams.
  • Easy-to-Use Controls: Your data should always be under your control, with easy access, updates, and deletion available in the app. Your personal data is exactly that, yours

Key Questions to Ask

Before trusting any period tracker with your data, ask:

  • What data am I asked to share? Look for a detailed list of information the app collects.
  • How is it used? You should be able to clearly see how your data is used and why it is necessary.
  • Who has access? Find out if the app shares data with third parties, and if so, who they are and for what reason.
  • How long is it kept? Check how long your data is kept and why.
  • Can I delete it? Make sure you can easily delete your data at any time.
  • Does the app have advanced privacy & security features? Look for options like Anonymous Mode, encryption, and biometric locks.

Privacy Features That Make a Difference

The most privacy-conscious period trackers offer features like:

  • Anonymous modes that ensure no one, not even the app itself, can identify you by your health data. See how Flo's Anonymous Mode works.
  • End-to-end encryption for data in transit and at rest
  • Biometric locks (fingerprint or Face ID) for an extra layer of security
  • Customizable notification privacy so your reminders stay personal
  • In-app consent management so you can control exactly what you're sharing

Your reproductive health data deserves the highest level of protection. Don’t settle for vague promises or broad claims about “trust” without clear evidence behind them. Take a moment to understand how your period tracker handles your information. Look for apps that are open about their data practices, provide independent verification of their security standards, and—most importantly—give you meaningful control over your data.

Visit Flo's Privacy Portal to see how we implement these practices.

When it comes to your health, this level of openness matters.

Your body. Your data.
